How to Get Rid of Black Dots on Clothes?

Black dots on clothes can stem from various sources, including mold, mildew, pilling, or even transferred dirt. The removal method depends heavily on the cause. Let's explore solutions for each possibility.

Before treating the black dots, correctly identifying their source is crucial for effective removal.

  • Mold or Mildew: These appear as dark spots, often black, grey, or green, and usually occur due to dampness. They often have a musty odor. This is especially common in laundry left wet for extended periods.
  • Pilling: Tiny black balls of fabric fibers, common on softer materials like sweaters and fleece. These aren't stains but rather accumulated fabric fibers.
  • Transferred Dirt: Black specks could be from dirt, soot, or other contaminants transferred to your clothes.

Removing Black Dots:

1. Mold and Mildew Removal:

Several effective methods exist to remove mold and mildew:

  • Bleach Solution: A solution of bleach (follow product instructions carefully and test in an inconspicuous area first) and water can effectively eliminate mold and mildew. Soak the affected garment in this solution before washing as usual. For tougher stains, a solution of Clorox® Disinfecting Bleach (or similar) can be used. (Clorox Philippines)
  • Mold Stain Remover: Store-bought mold stain removers, including products like Borax or hydrogen peroxide, can target mold and mildew. Apply directly to the affected area, scrubbing gently with a toothbrush if needed. ([Apply Mould Stain Remover](Apply Mould Stain Remover))
  • Vinegar and Sun: A mixture of white vinegar and water can also be effective. After treating with vinegar, allow the garment to dry completely in direct sunlight to further eliminate the mold. (My white vest have got black spots...)

Important Note: Always test any cleaning solution on a hidden area of the garment first to ensure it doesn't damage the fabric.

2. Pilling Removal:

Pilling is easily addressed using various methods:

  • Shaving Razor: Gently shave off the pills using a cheap disposable razor.
  • Fabric Shaver: An electric fabric shaver is a more efficient tool for larger areas.
  • Pilling Stone: A pumice-like stone can also remove pills.

3. Transferred Dirt Removal:

For dirt or soot, try these solutions:

  • Pre-treat: Use a pre-treatment stain remover before washing.
  • Washing: Wash the garment in hot water (check care label first).
  • Re-wash: If necessary, re-wash to completely eliminate the spots.

Preventing Black Dots:

  • Prompt Laundry: Wash clothes promptly to avoid mold and mildew growth.
  • Dry Thoroughly: Ensure clothes are completely dry before storing.
  • Proper Storage: Store clothes in a clean, dry place with good ventilation.
