This process involves several key steps:

  1. Find the Mean: Calculate the arithmetic average of all the data points in your set.
  2. Calculate Deviations: For each data point, find its difference from the mean (Data Point - Mean). These are the deviations.
  3. Square the Deviations: Square each of the deviations calculated in step 2. Squaring ensures that all differences are positive and gives more weight to larger deviations.
  4. Calculate the Average of Squared Deviations: Sum up all the squared deviations and divide by the number of data points (or n-1 for sample variance, but the core concept is the average). This final result is the variance.

What Variance Tells You

As a measure of spread, variance provides valuable insights into your data:

  • Degree of Spread: Variance tells you the degree of spread in your data set. A higher variance indicates that the data points are more spread out from the mean, while a lower variance suggests they are clustered closer to the mean.
