How do I use Steam Cloud Storage?

Published in Steam Cloud Usage 2 mins read

Steam Cloud Storage allows you to save your game progress and settings online, so you can access them from any computer. Here's how to use it:

Enabling Steam Cloud Globally

  1. Open Steam Settings: Head to the Steam client. In the top-left corner, click on "Steam," then select "Settings."
  2. Navigate to Cloud: In the Settings window, click on "Cloud."
  3. Enable Steam Cloud: Make sure the box labeled "Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for applications which support it" is checked.

This enables Steam Cloud for all games that support it by default.

Enabling Steam Cloud for Specific Games

Even if Steam Cloud is enabled globally, you can manage it on a per-game basis.

  1. Right-Click Game: In your Steam Library, right-click on the game you want to manage.
  2. Select Properties: Choose "Properties" from the context menu.
  3. Go to General Tab: In the Properties window, click on the "General" tab.
  4. Enable Cloud Saves: Ensure the box labeled "Keep game saves in the Steam Cloud for [game name]" is checked. This setting ensures the game's save data is backed up to the Steam Cloud.

Verifying Cloud Sync Status

After playing a game, Steam usually syncs your save data automatically. You can verify this by:

  • Checking the Steam download page to see if cloud sync is in progress
  • Ensuring that Steam is running when you exit the game, as cloud sync generally happens when the game is closed.

What if Cloud Sync Fails?

If you encounter issues with Steam Cloud, try the following:

  • Check your internet connection: A stable internet connection is required for syncing.
  • Restart Steam: Restarting Steam can often resolve sync issues.
  • Verify Game Files: In the game's properties (right-click, Properties, Local Files), click "Verify integrity of game files..." This can fix corrupted game files that might prevent syncing.
  • Free up Cloud Storage: If your Steam Cloud storage is full, it may not be able to sync new save data. You can manage your cloud storage from the Steam client.
