How Do You Tighten a Stop Tap?

Published in Stop Tap Repair 3 mins read

If you have a leak at the pipe connections of your stop tap, you can often fix it by carefully tightening the compression nuts located on either side of the pipework.

Addressing Leaks by Tightening Compression Nuts

A common issue with stop taps, particularly those using compression fittings, is a leak occurring where the tap connects to the incoming or outgoing pipes. These connections are secured by compression nuts. If these nuts become slightly loose over time, water can escape.

Tools You'll Need

To tighten the compression nuts on your stop tap, you will primarily need:

  • Water Pump Pliers: Also known as adjustable pliers or pipe pliers.
  • Another pair of Pliers (optional but recommended): To hold the tap body steady.

Steps to Tighten Compression Nuts

Follow these steps to tighten the compression nuts and potentially stop a leak at the pipe connections:

  1. Identify the Leak: Locate the leak. If it's coming from where the pipes join the tap body, you'll see water dripping or spraying from around the large nuts on either side of the tap.
  2. Prepare Your Tools: Grab your water pump pliers and a second pair if you have one.
  3. Steady the Tap: Using your water pump pliers, grip the tap to keep it steady. This prevents the tap body from twisting and potentially damaging the pipework as you tighten the nuts.
  4. Tighten the Nut(s): Then take your pliers and turn the nut/s clockwise until the leak stops. Focus on the nut corresponding to the pipe where the leak is occurring. Turn it gently at first, checking if the leak stops. Overtightening can damage the pipe or the fitting. Tighten only enough to stop the water.
  5. Check for Leaks: Observe the connection for a few minutes to ensure the leak has completely stopped.

Note: If the leak persists after gentle tightening, the issue might be a damaged olive (the brass ring inside the compression fitting) or damaged pipework, which may require replacing the fitting or a plumber's assistance.

Tightening the compression nuts is a specific task to fix leaks at the pipe connections, and it's important to use the right tools and techniques to avoid causing further damage.
