Methods for Hanging String Lights

Published in String Lights Installation 3 mins read

Hanging string lights on a wall can easily add ambiance to any space, indoors or out. The best method often depends on the type of wall surface you are working with.

While various approaches exist, one practical technique, especially suited for specific surfaces, involves using adhesive.

Using a Hot Glue Gun (Ideal for Brick/Outside Walls)

According to one method, one of the most practical and easiest ways to hang fairy lights on either bricks or any outside wall is using a hot glue gun.

Here's how this method works:

  1. Plan Your Design: First, lay out how you want your lights to look on the wall. You can even use a pencil to lightly mark the path.
  2. Apply Glue: Dab a small amount of hot glue directly at the base of each lightbulb or fixture along your planned route.
  3. Secure in Place: Press the glued part of the light firmly onto the wall surface. Hold it in place for about 20 seconds for a more secure stick.

This hot glue method is noted for being effective on challenging surfaces like brick and generally on outside walls where other adhesives might fail.

Other Common Indoor Methods

For smoother indoor surfaces like painted drywall, alternative methods are often preferred as they are less likely to damage the wall upon removal:

  • Adhesive Hooks or Clips: Small, clear adhesive hooks or specialized light clips can be stuck directly to the wall. The light string is then threaded through or clipped into these fixtures. These are generally easy to apply and remove cleanly, provided you follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Command Strips: Similar to hooks, but you might use the strips directly with clips designed to hold wires, or even loop the wire and secure it with a strip over the loop (though this might not be the most aesthetically pleasing).
  • Small Nails or Tacks: For a more permanent installation or on surfaces where small holes aren't an issue, tiny finishing nails or tacks can be partially hammered in to create points for wrapping the string lights.
  • Wire Clips with Adhesive Backing: These small plastic clips have a channel for the wire and an adhesive back that sticks to the wall, offering a clean look.
Method Best For Pros Cons
Hot Glue Gun Brick, Rough Surfaces, Outdoors Strong hold, effective on tough surfaces Potential wall damage upon removal, requires a glue gun
Adhesive Hooks/Clips Smooth Walls (Drywall, Wood) Easy to use, often removable cleanly May lose adhesion in humidity or on textured surfaces
Small Nails/Tacks Surfaces tolerant of holes Secure hold, simple Leaves small holes in the wall
Wire Clips w/ Adhesive Smooth Walls Tidy appearance May lose adhesion, less secure for heavy lights

Choosing the right method ensures your string lights stay put and look great, adding a warm, inviting glow to your space.
