How to Put a Suit in a Backpack?

Published in Suit Packing 2 mins read

To pack a suit jacket in a backpack while minimizing wrinkles, you can fold it carefully using a specific method.

When space is tight and a garment bag isn't an option, knowing how to properly fold a suit jacket for transport in a backpack is essential. This method focuses on protecting the jacket from creases during travel.

Method for Packing a Suit Jacket

Based on effective packing techniques, here’s how to fold your suit coat to fit into a backpack:

  1. Prepare the Jacket: Lay your suit coat flat on a clean, level surface. Smooth out any existing wrinkles.
  2. Add Protection: Slip a dry cleaner bag (or a similar thin plastic bag) over the coat. This barrier helps reduce friction between fabric layers, which can cause wrinkles.
  3. Arrange Arms: Arrange the arms of the coat so they are straight down the front, following the line of the jacket body.
  4. Insert Tissue Paper (Optional but Recommended): Ideally, place tissue paper between the layers of fabric as you fold. This provides cushioning and further prevents creases.
  5. Fold in Thirds: Fold the suit coat into thirds. Begin by folding the bottom third of the coat upwards. Then, fold the top third (shoulders/collar area) down to meet the folded bottom edge. This creates a compact rectangular shape.
  6. Place in Backpack: Carefully place the folded suit jacket into your backpack. It's best to place it on top of other packed items or in its own section if your backpack has one, to avoid crushing it.

This folding technique, especially the use of a dry cleaner bag and tissue paper, helps maintain the shape of the jacket and significantly reduces creasing compared to simply stuffing it into a bag. Remember that suit pants and shirts would require separate folding methods to pack alongside the jacket.
