A dry well for a sump pump is an underground structure specifically designed to receive and dispose of water pumped out by a sump pump. It functions as a covered, porous-walled chamber that allows the collected water to slowly soak into the surrounding ground.

When a sump pump activates, typically collecting excess groundwater or rainwater from a basement or crawl space, it discharges this unwanted water through a pipe. Instead of directing this water to a storm drain, surface area, or sewer (which may be restricted), the pipe leads to a dry well.

Inside the dry well, the water is contained temporarily within the porous structure. The walls and bottom of the chamber, often made of perforated materials like concrete rings, plastic crates, or gravel-filled pits, allow the water to seep gradually into the surrounding soil. This slow release prevents immediate saturation of the nearby ground and helps manage water disposal effectively on the property.
