Is Aloe Vera a Sunscreen?

Published in Sun Protection 1 min read

While aloe vera gel can be applied before sun exposure and some studies suggest it blocks roughly 20% of UV rays, it is not a substitute for sunscreen. Aloe vera can help soothe and heal sunburns, but it does not offer sufficient protection against harmful UV rays.

Here's why:

  • Limited UV Protection: Aloe vera's UV protection is minimal and inconsistent, and it doesn't offer broad-spectrum coverage against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Sunscreen Standards: Sunscreens are rigorously tested and regulated to ensure they meet specific SPF and UVA protection standards, which aloe vera does not.

Therefore, relying solely on aloe vera for sun protection can lead to sunburn and long-term skin damage. Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher for optimal protection.
