Does Vaseline Remove Sunburn?

Published in Sunburn Treatment 1 min read

Vaseline, or petroleum jelly, is not recommended for treating sunburn. While it can help to heal dry skin and protect minor sunburns by creating a barrier that seals in moisture, it can also trap heat and sweat, leading to more inflammation and discomfort. This can worsen the sunburn and even increase the risk of infection.

Instead of using Vaseline, focus on cooling and soothing the burned skin with cool compresses, aloe vera gel, and over-the-counter pain relievers.

Remember:

  • Do not use butter, petroleum jelly, or other oil-based products on sunburns.
  • Avoid picking at or peeling away the top part of blisters.
