How Many Sunscreen is Enough?

Published in Sunscreen Application 2 mins read

The amount of sunscreen you need depends on the area of your body being protected. For most adults, experts recommend applying one ounce (approximately 30ml) of sunscreen to your entire body, which is enough to fill a shot glass. This amount ensures adequate coverage for optimal protection. For your face and neck alone, a quarter-teaspoon is sufficient. Regardless of the amount, always use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Determining the Right Amount:

  • Full Body: One ounce (shot glass full) is the general guideline for complete body coverage. Remember to reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
  • Face and Neck: A quarter-teaspoon, roughly the size of a nickel, is recommended for your face and the front of your neck. Reapply as needed, especially after sweating or washing your face.
  • SPF (Sun Protection Factor): Choose an SPF 30 or higher for optimal protection against UVB rays. While higher SPFs offer marginally increased protection, the difference isn't significant compared to the thorough application of SPF 30.

Why Sufficient Sunscreen Application Matters:

Insufficient sunscreen application significantly reduces its effectiveness. Using less than the recommended amount compromises the SPF rating, leaving you vulnerable to sunburn and increased risk of skin cancer.

Important Considerations:

  • Reapplication: Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.
  • Consistency: Daily application, even on cloudy days and during winter, is crucial for maintaining long-term skin health.
  • Makeup: Makeup with SPF is not a substitute for sunscreen. You would need to apply a far larger amount of makeup than typically used to reach the advertised SPF.
