What Is an Example of SuDS?

Published in Sustainable Drainage 2 mins read

An example of SuDS is an attenuation pond.

SuDS, or Sustainable Drainage Systems, are approaches to manage surface water runoff in a way that mimics natural processes. Instead of quickly directing water away through conventional drainage, SuDS aim to control the flow, reduce pollution, and often provide environmental benefits.

Types of SuDS

There are many different types of SuDS that can be incorporated into developments and landscapes. According to reference information, these can include:

  • Attenuation ponds: These are basins designed to temporarily hold water during peak flows, slowly releasing it afterwards to reduce the risk of flooding downstream.
  • Swales: These are shallow, often vegetated channels designed to convey and/or infiltrate surface water runoff.
  • Infiltration basins: These are ponds or depressions where surface water collects and is allowed to soak into the ground.
  • Permeable paving: This type of surfacing allows water to pass through into a storage layer below, where it can then infiltrate into the ground or be released slowly.

The specific SuDS solution chosen for a project is often dependent upon the individual site constraints, such as soil type, topography, and available space.
