What are Level 0 Thin Fluids?

Published in Swallowing Difficulties 1 min read

Level 0 thin fluids are essentially regular, everyday liquids that have not been thickened and flow freely.

Thin fluids, also known as nectar-thin liquids or regular liquids, are characterized by their ease of pouring and drinking, similar to water. These fluids do not require any modification for individuals with normal swallowing abilities. However, some individuals with dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) might find thin liquids difficult to manage, leading to aspiration (liquid entering the lungs). In such cases, thickening agents might be added to achieve a thicker consistency as prescribed by a speech-language pathologist or other healthcare professional.

Here are some common examples of Level 0 thin fluids:

  • Water
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Milk
  • Juice
  • Soda (Pop)
  • Beer
  • Wine

These fluids present the lowest risk of causing swallowing difficulties for those with normal swallowing function. They are suitable for general hydration and consumption without any specific restrictions related to viscosity or texture.
