Step-by-Step Guide to Wearing Your Goggles

How Do You Put On Your Swimming Goggles?

Putting on swimming goggles is a simple two-step process focused on creating a secure, comfortable seal for clear underwater vision.

Achieving a good fit is crucial for preventing leaks and ensuring comfort during your swim. Follow these steps to properly put on your swimming goggles:

1. Positioning the Eyecups for Suction

The first critical step involves placing the eyecups correctly to form a leak-proof seal around your eyes.

  • Hold the Goggles: Take the goggles and hold them by the eyecups, one in each hand.
  • Place and Press: Start by pressing the eyecups to your face directly over your eyes. Gently apply pressure until you feel a light suction. This initial suction indicates that a proper seal is forming, which is essential for keeping water out. Without this seal, water can easily seep into the goggles.

2. Securing with the Backstrap

Once the eyecups are in place and a light seal is established, the next step is to secure the goggles using the backstrap.

  • Pull the Backstrap: Once you've got the eyecups in place, pull the stretchy backstrap up over your head. Ensure it sits comfortably around the back of your head, typically just above your ears.
  • Adjust for Comfort and Security: Adjust it to the appropriate length so it secures the goggles but doesn't squeeze too tight. The strap should be snug enough to hold the goggles firmly against your face, maintaining the suction seal, but not so tight that it causes discomfort, headaches, or leaves deep marks around your eyes. A properly adjusted strap will keep the goggles in place without feeling restrictive.

Tips for a Perfect Fit

  • Test the Seal: Before fully submerging, gently press the goggles onto your face without the strap, release your hands, and see if they stay on for a moment due to suction. If they do, you have a good seal.
  • Avoid Over-Tightening: An overly tight strap can be uncomfortable and might even pull the eyecups away from your face, paradoxically breaking the seal and leading to leaks.
  • Clear Vision: Once on, ensure your vision is clear and unobstructed through the lenses.
