What does TF mean in swimming?

Published in Swimming Terminology 1 min read

In swimming, TF stands for Time Fault.

Understanding Time Fault (TF)

A Time Fault occurs when a swimmer exceeds the designated cut-off time for a particular event, typically found in EML (East Midlands League) fixtures. When a swimmer incurs a TF:

  • Their time is still recorded and can count as a Personal Best (PB) if it is faster than their previous time for that event.
  • However, the swimmer does not score any points for their team in that event.

Time Fault in the Context of Personal Best (PB)

It's important to note that even with a Time Fault, a swimmer can still achieve a Personal Best (PB). PBs are a crucial aspect of swimming, as they represent individual improvement and motivate swimmers to continually strive for better times, regardless of their skill level. The TF simply impacts the scoring within a team-based competition like EML fixtures.
