How to Use Transfer Paper on T Shirts

Published in T-Shirt Customization 4 mins read

Using transfer paper on t-shirts involves printing your design, carefully placing the paper onto the fabric, and applying heat and pressure with an iron or heat press.

Applying a custom design to a t-shirt with transfer paper is a popular DIY method. It allows you to personalize apparel using a standard inkjet or laser printer.

What You'll Need

To get started, gather the following items:

  • An inkjet or laser printer
  • Iron-on transfer paper (specific for light or dark fabrics)
  • A t-shirt or other fabric item
  • Your design printed on the transfer paper
  • A hard, heat-resistant surface (like a wooden table, not an ironing board)
  • An iron or heat press
  • Parchment paper (often included with transfer paper)
  • Scissors

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Follow these steps for best results when applying transfer paper to your t-shirt:

  1. Prepare Your Design:

    • Create or select your design on a computer.
    • Important: For light fabric transfer paper, mirror (flip horizontally) your image before printing. For dark fabric transfer paper, print the image as is (do not mirror).
    • Print the design onto the transfer paper, ensuring you print on the correct side as indicated by the paper manufacturer.
    • Trim away any excess unprinted transfer paper around your design, leaving a small border if desired.
  2. Prepare the T-Shirt:

    • Place your t-shirt flat on a hard, heat-resistant surface. Avoid using an ironing board as it's too soft and will result in uneven pressure.
    • Pre-iron the area where you plan to apply the transfer to remove any wrinkles and moisture.
  3. Position the Transfer:

    • This is a critical step, varying based on your paper type. According to the reference: Place light transfer paper face down and place dark transfer paper face up.
    • Make sure the image is straight and in the correct position on the t-shirt. Use a ruler or measuring tape if needed for precise placement.
  4. Apply Heat with an Iron:

    • Pre-heat your iron to the temperature setting recommended by your transfer paper instructions (usually the highest cotton setting, with no steam).
    • Place the included parchment paper (or a thin cotton cloth) over the transfer paper on the shirt.
    • As per the reference: Press the iron firmly onto the t shirt, applying pressure with your whole hand. Do not glide the iron like regular ironing. Instead, press down firmly on one section for several seconds, then lift and move to the next section, overlapping slightly.
    • Cover the entire design area multiple times to ensure even heat distribution.
    • Reference note: Your transfer paper should specify how long to iron. Follow these instructions precisely. Ironing for too short a time can prevent proper adhesion, while ironing for too long can scorch the paper or shirt.
  5. Cool and Peel:

    • Once you have ironed for the recommended time, remove the parchment paper (if used).
    • Let the transfer cool according to the transfer paper instructions. Some papers are "hot peel" (peel immediately), while others are "cool peel" (wait until cool).
    • Carefully peel the backing paper away from the fabric. If the image starts to lift, stop and re-iron that section.

Light vs. Dark Transfer Paper

The type of transfer paper you use significantly impacts the process, especially regarding mirroring the image and placement:

Feature Light Fabric Transfer Paper Dark Fabric Transfer Paper
Fabric Color Works best on white or very light-colored shirts Works best on black or dark-colored shirts
Printing Image must be mirrored before printing Image is printed as is (do not mirror)
Placement Place paper face down on the shirt Place paper face up on the shirt
Result Ink dyes into the fabric (translucent) White layer is transferred; ink sits on top (opaque)

Always consult the specific instructions provided with your transfer paper, as slight variations may exist between brands.
