How to Change a Scotch Tape Dispenser?

Published in Tape Dispenser Maintenance 3 mins read

Changing the tape roll in your Scotch tape dispenser is a straightforward process that ensures you can keep your projects and tasks moving smoothly. It typically involves replacing the empty roll with a new one on the internal spindle or mandrel.

Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing Tape

Most Scotch tape dispensers, especially the common desk models, use a removable mandrel or spindle that holds the tape roll. Here's how to swap out an old roll for a new one:

1. Prepare Your Dispenser

First, ensure the old roll of tape is completely used or removed from the dispenser. Locate the central part that holds the tape roll – this is the mandrel or spindle.

2. Remove the Old Tape Roll

With the old roll of tape still on it, you need to detach the mandrel from the dispenser body. According to typical dispenser design:

  • Slide the mandrel/spindle with the tape on it toward the back of the dispenser and up to pull it out. This action releases the spindle from its holding slots within the dispenser.

Carefully set aside the old tape roll and its mandrel.

3. Place the New Roll on the Mandrel

Take your new roll of Scotch tape. Ensure you have the correct size roll for your dispenser.

  • Put the new roll of tape on the mandrel/spindle. The tape should fit snugly onto the spindle. Make sure the tape is oriented correctly so the sticky side will face down when dispensed.

4. Reinsert the Mandrel into the Dispenser

Now, place the mandrel with the new tape roll back into the dispenser body.

  • Align the mandrel with the corresponding slots in the dispenser.
  • Push the mandrel firmly down and potentially slightly forward (depending on the model) until it clicks securely into place. It should sit firmly and be able to spin freely.

5. Thread and Use the New Tape

Finally, pull the leading edge of the new tape off the roll. Thread it through the slot at the front of the dispenser and guide it towards the cutting blade. Pull the tape across the blade to cut the first piece and ensure it's dispensing correctly.

Following these steps will have your Scotch tape dispenser ready for use again in no time.
