A TBT blood test, also known as a tuberculosis (TB) blood test or Interferon Gamma Release Assay (IGRA), is a way to detect if you have TB germs in your body. This blood test is an alternative to the traditional TB skin test (Mantoux). There are two main types of TB blood tests: QuantiFERON®-TB and T-SPOT®.
A positive TBT blood test result indicates that you likely have TB germs in your body. Most people with a positive result have latent TB, meaning the bacteria is inactive and not causing symptoms. However, if the TB blood test is positive, you will need further evaluation and potentially treatment to prevent the infection from becoming active.
The TB blood test is a safe and convenient way to screen for TB. It is less invasive than the skin test and requires only a single blood draw. Results are typically available within 24-48 hours.
