Is there a TB vaccine?

Published in TB Vaccines 1 min read

Yes, there is a TB vaccine called Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG). It's the only TB vaccine currently available and was developed over 100 years ago. However, while it is effective in preventing severe forms of TB in children, it's not entirely effective in protecting against all types of TB, especially in adults. This vaccine is not generally used in the United States, but it is recommended for children living with someone who has active TB infection.

Currently, there is ongoing research to develop a more effective TB vaccine. One promising candidate is the M72/AS01E vaccine, which has shown significant protection against TB disease in a Phase IIb trial.

While the BCG vaccine is not a perfect solution, it does provide some protection against TB. New vaccine candidates hold promise for a more effective TB vaccine in the future.
