Who Invented Tea?

Published in Tea History 1 min read

According to legend, the person who "invented" tea is considered to be the Chinese emperor Shen Nung in 2737 BC.

While the exact process of "invention" is less about creating something entirely new and more about discovering its properties, the story goes that Emperor Shen Nung was sitting beneath a tree while his servant boiled water. Some leaves from the tree blew into the boiling water, creating an infusion. Being a renowned herbalist, Shen Nung decided to try it, thus discovering tea.

It is important to note that this is a legend and the actual origins of tea are likely more complex and evolved gradually over time. Tea consumption and cultivation likely developed over centuries in various parts of China and perhaps other regions of Asia as well. However, the story of Shen Nung is the most widely accepted and circulated narrative regarding the "invention" or discovery of tea.
