How Do You Unlock a Tesla With the Key Inside the Car?

Published in Tesla Unlocking 2 mins read

If you are inside your Tesla and have the key with you, you can easily unlock the doors using the car's touchscreen interface.

From within your Tesla, the primary method to unlock the doors when a valid key is detected inside the vehicle is through the central touchscreen display. This provides a convenient control point for various functions, including door and trunk access.

How to Unlock Using the Touchscreen

Utilizing the touchscreen is a straightforward process:

  • Ensure you are inside the vehicle and a valid key (like a key card, key fob, or authorized phone) is present within the car.
  • Look at the status bar located at the top of your Tesla's touchscreen display.
  • Touch the lock icon on the touchscreen's status bar. This icon toggles the state of the door locks, allowing you to unlock them from inside.

This method gives you direct control over the door locks whenever needed while you are seated in the car with the key.

Additional Settings

The reference also notes a setting related to locking and unlocking behavior when the vehicle is parked:

  • When you stop your Tesla and engage Park, you have the option to configure whether the doors automatically unlock or remain locked.

This setting offers an alternative or complementary behavior to manually touching the lock icon, providing added convenience upon arrival at your destination. However, for unlocking at any other time while inside with the key, the touchscreen icon is your direct control.
