How to Pass a Multiple Choice Test by Guessing?

Published in Test Taking Strategies 3 mins read

While not a reliable strategy for guaranteed success, here's how to improve your odds when guessing on a multiple-choice test:

Guessing Strategies to Improve Your Chances

When you absolutely have to guess, these techniques can slightly increase your likelihood of selecting the correct answer:

  • Eliminate Obvious Incorrect Answers: This is the most crucial step. Read each option carefully and cross out any that you know are wrong. Even eliminating one or two answers significantly improves your odds.

  • Look for Clues in Other Questions: Sometimes, information in other questions on the test can provide hints or confirm details relevant to the question you're guessing on.

  • Favor the Middle Ground (with caution): The reference suggests that when numerical answers vary widely, the correct answer is more likely to be in the middle range. Therefore, eliminate the highest and lowest options. However, use this as a last resort and only when numerical options are drastically different. Don't apply this blindly.

  • Identify Similar Options: As the reference states, if two options are very similar, except for one detail, one of those is likely the correct answer. Pay close attention to the subtle difference and try to determine which detail is correct.

  • "All of the Above" or "None of the Above": If "All of the Above" is an option, and you know at least two answers are correct, choose "All of the Above." If you know one is incorrect, eliminate "All of the Above." The same principle applies to "None of the Above."

  • Longer, More Detailed Answers: Sometimes, instructors include more information in the correct answer, making it slightly longer or more detailed than the incorrect options. This isn't a foolproof strategy, but it's worth considering.

  • Trust Your Gut (Sometimes): If you have a feeling about one of the answers, and you've already tried the other strategies, go with your intuition. It might be based on subconscious recall.

Limitations of Guessing

It's important to remember that guessing is not a substitute for studying and understanding the material. Guessing should only be used as a last resort when you don't know the answer.

Important Note: Some tests penalize incorrect answers. In these cases, it might be better to leave a question blank if you have no idea what the answer is. Carefully read the test instructions to understand the scoring system.
