How Do You Link Text Boxes?

Published in Text Box Linking 2 mins read

Linking text boxes allows text to flow automatically from one box to another when the first box is full.

Steps to Link Text Boxes

According to the guidance, linking text boxes is a straightforward process designed to manage text flow across multiple containers. Here are the steps:

  1. Select the First Text Box: Begin by clicking on the text box that contains or will contain the text you want to flow into another box.
  2. Access Shape Format: Go to the Shape Format or a similar drawing tools tab in your application's ribbon.
  3. Find Create Link: Within the Shape Format options, locate and select the Create Link command.
  4. Click the Destination Box: Finally, click on the empty text box you wish to link to. The text from the first box will then begin to flow into this second box once the first is full.
  • Important Note: You can only link the selected text box to a text box that is currently empty.

Why Link Text Boxes?

Linking text boxes is particularly useful for:

  • Creating multi-column layouts for articles or newsletters where text needs to span across columns.
  • Continuing text from one page to another, providing a seamless reading experience.
  • Ensuring text automatically adjusts and reflows as you edit content, without manual copying and pasting between boxes.

By linking, you create a story or thread that the text follows, making document design and editing more efficient.
