What is Text over IP?

Published in Text Communication 2 mins read

Text over IP (ToIP) is a method for sending real-time text (RTT) messages over internet protocol (IP) networks. Think of it as the text messaging equivalent of Voice over IP (VoIP). ToIP allows for conversational text communication, transmitting messages as they are typed, similar to instant messaging but potentially using different underlying protocols. It complements VoIP and Video over IP services, offering a comprehensive communication solution.

How Text over IP Works

ToIP leverages IP-based networks, the same infrastructure used for the internet, to transmit text messages. Instead of relying on traditional cellular networks, ToIP uses internet connectivity to send and receive text. This is achieved through various protocols, including the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), as detailed in RFC 5194.

  • Real-time transmission: Messages are sent instantly, allowing for a back-and-forth conversation, much like traditional text messaging.
  • IP-based infrastructure: Relies on the internet for communication, making it independent of traditional phone lines or cellular networks.
  • Complementary to VoIP and Video over IP: Provides a text-based communication option alongside voice and video services, offering a complete communication package.
  • SMS over IP (SMSoIP): A specific application of ToIP that allows sending SMS messages over IP networks, bypassing traditional cellular carriers. This often requires SMS gateways or specialized providers.

Examples and Applications

  • Instant messaging applications: Many popular chat apps use ToIP principles, transmitting text messages over the internet.
  • Business communication platforms: ToIP enables businesses to integrate text messaging into their communication systems using VoIP phone numbers, often allowing for SMS integration with their existing VoIP systems.
  • Enhanced communication for individuals with disabilities: ToIP, specifically RTT, provides a powerful communication method for individuals who have hearing or speech impairments.

Accessing SMS over IP

Accessing SMS functionalities over IP often necessitates using a third-party provider or SMS gateway. These services offer APIs allowing developers to integrate SMS capabilities into their applications. Directly receiving SMS without a carrier using only IP usually isn't possible due to the necessity of registering numbers with a mobile network operator.
