How to set color code in Word?

Published in Text Formatting 3 mins read

You can set a specific color code in Microsoft Word by using custom RGB values within the "More Colors" option.

Setting a precise color using numerical codes ensures consistency, especially when trying to match branding or design specifications. Microsoft Word allows you to define colors using the Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) color model. Each color component (Red, Green, Blue) is represented by a value, typically ranging from 0 to 255.

Steps to Set a Custom Color Code (RGB)

Follow these steps to apply a specific color code to your text or other elements in Word:

  1. Select the Text or Object: Highlight the text or select the shape/object you want to color.
  2. Access Font Color Options: Go to the Home tab in the Word ribbon. Find the Font Color button (it looks like an 'A' with an underline, often displaying the current color).
  3. Open "More Colors": Click the small arrow next to the Font Color button to open the dropdown menu.
  4. Choose "More Colors": From the dropdown, select "More Colors...". (As noted in the reference, you can also access this using the Alt key shortcut: Alt, H, FC, M).
  5. Go to the "Custom" Tab: In the Colors dialogue box that appears, click on the Custom tab.
  6. Input RGB Values: You will see fields for "Red," "Green," and "Blue." Fill in the numerical values for your desired color code in the corresponding boxes. Values typically range from 0 to 255.
  7. Preview the Color: As you enter the values, you will see the new color displayed in the "New" section of the dialogue box.
  8. Apply the Color: Once you have entered the correct RGB values, click "OK".

The selected text or object will now be updated with the custom color you defined using the RGB code. This method allows for much greater precision than selecting from the standard color palette or theme colors.

Example:

Let's say you want to set a vibrant blue color. You would input the specific RGB values, for instance:

  • Red: 0
  • Green: 0
  • Blue: 255

Entering these values in the Custom tab would apply a pure, bright blue. Different combinations of numbers will create millions of possible colors.

By using the "More Colors" option and its "Custom" tab, you gain control over the exact color applied, ensuring your documents adhere to specific color requirements.
