Thrombocytosis is a condition where your body produces too many platelets. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
- Overproduction of thrombopoietin, IL6, other cytokines, or catecholamines in inflammatory, infectious, or neoplastic conditions or secondary to stress.
- Reactive thrombocytosis, which is a temporary increase in platelet count caused by another disease or condition. This is often called secondary or reactive thrombocytosis. Examples include:
- Iron deficiency
- Infection
- Acute blood loss
- Surgery
- Inflammation
- Chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus
- Autonomous thrombocytosis, which is a condition where the bone marrow produces too many platelets independently of any other disease or condition. This is sometimes called essential thrombocythemia or primary thrombocythemia.
It is important to note that thrombocytosis is not always a cause for concern. In many cases, it is a temporary condition that resolves on its own. However, if you have any concerns, it is important to see a doctor to determine the cause of your thrombocytosis and to receive appropriate treatment.
