RICE Protocol for a Jammed Thumb
The RICE protocol is a standard first-aid treatment for soft tissue injuries like a jammed thumb:
- Rest: Avoid using your thumb as much as possible for at least 48 hours. This allows the injured tissues to begin the healing process. (Ref. 1)
- Ice: Apply ice wrapped in a thin cloth to the injured thumb immediately after the injury. This helps reduce swelling and inflammation. Apply ice for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day. (Ref. 2)
