How to Feel Your Thyroid

Published in Thyroid Palpation 2 mins read

Here's how to locate and feel your thyroid using a simple step-by-step method:

Steps to Palpate Your Thyroid

The thyroid gland is located in the front of your neck, below your Adam's apple. To feel it, follow these steps, drawing on techniques described in the reference:

  1. Start at Your Chin: Place your finger on the tip of your chin (mentalis).
  2. Slide Down the Midline: Gently slide your finger down the midline of your neck.
  3. Locate the Thyroid Cartilage: The first hard structure you encounter is the top of your thyroid cartilage. This is often more prominent in men and is known as the Adam's apple.
  4. Follow the Edge: Run your finger down the front edge or the "prow" of the thyroid cartilage.

By following the edge of the thyroid cartilage downwards and outwards to each side, you can start to identify the approximate location of the thyroid gland itself.

Additional Information

Please note:

  • The thyroid is a relatively small butterfly-shaped gland.
  • It is not always easily felt, especially if it's normal in size.
  • The purpose of this palpation is for self-examination and should not replace any medical examination or evaluation.

If you feel any unusual lumps, bumps or swelling in this area, consult a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Do not self-diagnose or treat any medical condition.
