How to Use a Tile Cutter

Published in Tile Cutting 3 mins read

Learn the simple steps to make clean cuts on tiles with a manual tile cutter.

Using a manual tile cutter is an effective way to make straight cuts on ceramic or porcelain tiles without creating dust. The process involves two main steps: scoring the tile and then breaking it.

Preparing for the Cut

Before you begin, ensure your workspace is stable and clear.

  1. Mark the Tile: Use a pencil or marker to clearly indicate the desired cut line on the tile surface.
  2. Position the Tile: Place the tile onto the bed of the tile cutter, aligning your marked line with the cutter's guide or fence. Ensure the tile is securely seated against any stops or guides.

Scoring the Tile

Scoring creates a weakened line along which the tile will break.

  1. Position the Scoring Wheel: Bring the scoring wheel mechanism down so it is positioned right against the tile with a little bit of pressure on the handle.
  2. Apply Consistent Pressure: Starting from the edge furthest from you, push the scoring handle firmly but smoothly along the tile surface. You should create a single, continuous score line from one end to the other. Avoid multiple passes, as this can lead to a jagged break.

Breaking the Tile

Once scored, the tile is ready to be snapped along the line.

  1. Move the Handle: Slide the handle mechanism down to the breaking bar, usually located at the end of the cutter bed. The breaking bar should be centered directly over your scored line.
  2. Apply Breaking Force: Hold the tool firmly against the surface that you have it set on. With the breaking bar positioned over the score line, push down and push the handle. This action applies pressure to either side of the score, causing the tile to snap cleanly along the line.

Important Tips

  • Always wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from tile shards.
  • Ensure the tile cutter is on a flat, stable surface.
  • Practice on a scrap tile first if you are new to using a tile cutter.
  • A single, firm score is usually better than multiple light scores.

Using a manual tile cutter is a straightforward process ideal for straight cuts on standard tiles.
