How do you lay tile with grout?

Published in Tile Installation 3 mins read

Laying tile with grout involves several steps, starting with mixing the grout and ending with cleaning the finished surface. Here’s a breakdown:

Steps to Laying Tile with Grout

  1. Prepare the Area: Before you begin, ensure the tiled surface is completely clean and dry. Remove any spacers that were used during tile installation.

  2. Mix the Grout: Choose between powdered grout (requires mixing with water) or ready-mix grout. Powdered grout is generally more cost-effective, but ready-mix is convenient. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for mixing to achieve the correct consistency. It should be similar to peanut butter.

  3. Apply the Grout: Use a grout float to spread the grout over the tile surface. Hold the float at a 45-degree angle and work the grout into the joints between the tiles. Apply firm pressure to ensure the grout fills the joints completely.

  4. Remove Excess Grout: After applying grout to a manageable area (e.g., a few square feet), remove excess grout from the tile surface. Use the grout float held at a sharp angle (almost perpendicular to the tile) to scrape off the excess.

  5. Clean with a Tile Sponge: Dampen a tile sponge with clean water and wring it out thoroughly. Gently wipe the tile surface diagonally across the grout lines to remove the remaining grout haze. Rinse the sponge frequently in clean water. Repeat this process until the tile surface is clean. Be careful not to remove grout from the joints.

  6. Shape the Grout Joints (Optional): A grout finisher tool (or even a finger) can be used to create a smooth, consistent profile in the grout joints. This step is mainly for aesthetics.

  7. Initial Cure: Allow the grout to set according to the manufacturer's instructions, usually 24-72 hours. Avoid walking on the tiled surface during this period.

  8. Remove Grout Haze: After the initial cure, a powdery film (grout haze) may appear on the tile surface. This can be removed with a clean, dry cloth or a grout haze remover (follow product instructions).

  9. Seal the Grout (Optional): Applying a grout sealer can help protect the grout from stains and moisture damage. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
