How Do You Use Self Leveling Tile Clips?

Published in Tile Installation 3 mins read

Self-leveling tile clips are tools designed to ensure tiles are installed flat and level, preventing lippage between adjacent tiles. They work by holding the edges of two tiles at the same height while the mortar dries.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using Tile Leveling Clips

Using self-leveling tile clips involves a simple process integrated into your standard tile installation workflow.

Here’s a breakdown of the typical steps:

  1. Prepare Your Surface: Ensure your substrate is clean, flat, and ready for tile installation according to standard practices.
  2. Apply Adhesive: Spread the appropriate tile mortar using a notched trowel.
  3. Lay the First Tile: Set your first tile into the mortar, ensuring it is correctly positioned and level.
  4. Place the Clips: Insert the base of the tile leveling clips under the edge of the first tile near the corners and along the sides, spaced according to the size of your tiles (as seen in the reference: "place the clip under the tile edge at the desired location"). The stem of the clip should stand upright.
  5. Install the Next Tile: Lay the adjacent tile, sliding its edge into the clip bases next to the first tile (as mentioned in the reference: "install the next style"). Ensure mortar is applied underneath this tile as well.
  6. Insert and Tighten Wedges or Caps: Slide a wedge or screw on a cap into the stem of the clip. Tighten it using pliers or a specialized tool until the edges of the two tiles are flush and level. Be careful not to over-tighten, as this can cause the clip to snap (as warned in the reference: "As they will snap on you").
  7. Repeat the Process: Continue laying tiles, inserting clips, and tightening wedges/caps around the edges of each new tile as you go.
  8. Allow Mortar to Dry: Let the tile mortar cure completely according to the manufacturer's instructions. Do not remove the clips prematurely.
  9. Remove the System: Once the mortar is fully dry, remove the wedges or caps. The stem of the clip is designed to break off at the base, usually by kicking it along the grout line or using a rubber mallet. Dispose of the broken stems and removed wedges/caps.

Important Tips

  • Use the correct size clip for your desired grout joint width.
  • Ensure there is enough mortar under the tile before tightening the wedges/caps.
  • Clean up excess mortar around the clips before it dries.
  • Always kick or tap the clip stems in the direction along the grout line to ensure they snap cleanly at the base without damaging the tile edge.
