    • Log Taper: The gradual decrease in diameter from the base to the top of the log. This influences how the log is sawn to minimize waste.
    • Defects: Identifying and minimizing the impact of knots, rot, and other imperfections within the log.
    • Desired Dimensions: The specific sizes and shapes of the lumber required for the intended application.
    • Grain Orientation: Considering how the grain runs through the wood, as this affects its strength, stability, and appearance.
  • Methods of Conversion: Several sawing methods are used, each producing different grain patterns and lumber qualities:
