Toe bones are called phalanges.
Understanding Toe Phalanges
The toes are made up of small bones called phalanges. Each toe (except the big toe) contains three phalanges:
- Proximal phalanx: The bone closest to the foot.
- Middle phalanx: The bone in the middle of the toe.
- Distal phalanx: The bone at the tip of the toe.
The big toe, similar to the thumb, only has two phalanges: a proximal and a distal phalanx. There are a total of 14 phalanges in both feet. These phalanges are shorter, stronger, and less mobile than the phalanges in the hands. They are also shorter than the metatarsals (the long bones in the foot).
Key Characteristics of Toe Phalanges
- Shorter and stronger: Compared to hand phalanges, toe phalanges are built for weight-bearing and stability.
- Less mobile: They offer less range of motion than hand phalanges.
- Number: 14 phalanges in total for both feet (2 in the big toe and 3 in each of the other four toes).
The structure of the phalanges allows for the toes to play crucial roles in balance, walking, and pushing off the ground.
