How Do You Use a Wax Ring on a Toilet?

Using a wax ring on a toilet involves creating a watertight and airtight seal between the toilet base and the drainpipe flange on the floor.

A wax ring is essential for preventing water leaks and sewage gas odors from escaping around the base of your toilet. It forms a pliable, durable seal that conforms to the shape of both the toilet's drain horn and the floor flange.

Here's a breakdown of how to use a wax ring during toilet installation:

1. Preparation is Key

Before using the wax ring, ensure the floor flange is clean and free of any old wax or debris. New Johnny bolts (toilet flange bolts) should be properly positioned in the flange slots.

2. Placing the Wax Ring

You have two primary options for placing the wax ring:

  • On the Flange: Place the wax ring directly onto the drain flange on the floor. Make sure it is centered around the drain opening.
  • On the Toilet: Invert the toilet and firmly press the wax ring onto the drain horn at the base of the toilet. This ensures the ring is securely attached to the toilet before you set it.

For best results, many professionals recommend placing the ring onto the toilet horn first, as it helps ensure proper alignment when setting the toilet down.

3. Setting the Toilet

This is a critical step that determines the quality of the seal.

  • Align Carefully: Line up the bolt holes on the toilet base with the Johnny bolts sticking up from the flange.
  • Set Straight Down: As shown in the reference, set the toilet straight down onto the wax ring and flange. Aim to land it squarely in position on the first try.
  • Small Twist (Optional but per reference): The reference suggests applying a small twist as you set it down. This minor rotation can help the wax ring compress evenly and form a good seal.
  • No Rocking: Once the toilet is down, do not rock it or lift it up. Rocking can break the wax seal you just created.

4. Securing the Toilet

After the toilet is properly seated on the wax ring:

  • Secure Johnny Bolts: The reference notes to secure Johnny bolts. Use washers and nuts to tighten the bolts evenly on both sides of the toilet base. Tighten them just enough to hold the toilet firmly in place and compress the wax ring without overtightening, which can crack the toilet base or the flange.
  • Install Bolt Caps: Cover the bolts with decorative caps if your toilet came with them.

Key Considerations

  • Types of Wax Rings: Standard wax rings are the most common. Wax rings with a plastic funnel are designed to help guide waste directly into the drainpipe, potentially offering a slightly more robust seal.
  • Subfloor Condition: Ensure the floor and flange area are level and solid before installation.
  • Bolt Length: Make sure your Johnny bolts are long enough to go through the toilet base and allow the nut and washer to be secured.

Properly using a wax ring ensures a long-lasting, leak-free connection for your toilet.
