The four types of tonsils that form Waldeyer's ring in the oropharynx are the palatine tonsils, adenoid, lingual tonsil, and tubal tonsils. These lymphatic tissues play a role in the immune system.
Types of Tonsils
The tonsils are part of the lymphatic system, which helps fight infection. They are located in the back of the throat and nasal cavity. The four types of tonsils are:
- Palatine Tonsils (Faucial Tonsils): Located on both sides of the oropharynx, these are what people typically refer to as "tonsils."
- Adenoid (Nasopharyngeal Tonsil): Located in the nasopharynx, behind the nasal cavity.
- Lingual Tonsil: Located at the base of the tongue.
- Tubal Tonsils: Located around the opening of the Eustachian tubes.
These four types of tonsils together form a ring of lymphatic tissue known as Waldeyer's ring, which surrounds the entrance to the pharynx. This ring is strategically positioned to encounter and respond to pathogens entering the body through the nose and mouth.
