Why Do My Teeth Feel Sticky After Tooth Extraction?

Published in Tooth Extraction Care 2 mins read

The sticky feeling on your teeth after a tooth extraction is likely due to a combination of factors related to the healing process.

Common Causes of Sticky Teeth After Extraction

Several things can contribute to that sticky feeling you're experiencing:

  • Dried Blood: Blood clots form in the extraction site, and some blood may spread to nearby teeth. As it dries, it can create a sticky residue.
  • Thickened Saliva: Your saliva composition can change slightly after surgery. It may become thicker, contributing to a sticky sensation.
  • Suture Residue: If you had stitches placed, the suture material itself or residue from it can feel sticky against your teeth and tongue.
  • Medications: Some medications prescribed after tooth extraction can dry your mouth out. Dry mouth can make your saliva thicker and stickier.

How to Get Rid of the Sticky Feeling

Fortunately, this sensation is usually temporary and manageable:

  1. Gentle Brushing: Carefully brush your teeth, avoiding the extraction site initially. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush. After a few days, when the extraction site is less sensitive, you can gently brush the teeth nearest the extraction site to remove any blood or debris.
  2. Saltwater Rinse: Rinse your mouth gently with warm saltwater (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) several times a day. This helps to keep the area clean and promotes healing. Start the saltwater rinses 24 hours after the extraction.
  3. Hydration: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and help prevent dry mouth.
  4. Follow Dentist's Instructions: Adhere to all post-operative instructions provided by your dentist or oral surgeon.

When to Contact Your Dentist

While a sticky feeling is usually normal, contact your dentist if you experience:

  • Excessive pain or swelling
  • Fever
  • Persistent bleeding
  • Bad taste or odor in your mouth

These symptoms could indicate an infection or other complication that needs professional attention.
