A truck vacuum pump works by creating a low-pressure environment to assist systems like power brakes and other vacuum-operated components. It essentially sucks air out of the vacuum system.

Here's a breakdown of the process:

  • Positive Displacement: The pump employs a positive displacement mechanism. This means it traps a fixed volume of air and physically moves it from the vacuum system.

  • Air Removal: The pump draws air from the connected vacuum system. This action reduces the pressure within the system, creating a vacuum.

  • Pressure Generation: These pumps typically generate a negative pressure (vacuum) ranging from 750 to 850 mbar (approximately 10 to 12 psi).

  • Discharge: The air that's been removed from the vacuum system is then routed through the crankcase ventilation system.

  • Integration with Air Intake: Finally, the air is directed into the engine's air intake system, where it is combusted along with the regular air/fuel mixture.
