What is the TSA Limit?

Published in TSA Liquid Limits 2 mins read

The TSA limit for liquids, gels, and aerosols in carry-on luggage is defined by the 3-1-1 rule. This means each passenger is limited to one quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag containing liquids, gels, aerosols, creams, and pastes. Each individual container within that bag must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less.

Understanding the 3-1-1 Rule

  • 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less: This is the maximum size for each individual container of liquid, gel, or aerosol.
  • 1 quart-sized bag: All your 3.4-ounce containers must fit inside a single, quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag.
  • 1 bag per passenger: Each passenger is allowed only one such bag.

This rule applies to all passengers traveling through TSA checkpoints. Exceptions may be made for medically necessary liquids or baby formula, but these should be declared to TSA officers. Larger quantities of liquids should be packed in checked baggage.

Examples of items subject to the 3-1-1 rule include:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Lotion
  • Mouthwash
  • Perfume
  • Hair gel
  • Sunscreen
