A skin or blood TB test is a way to determine if you have been infected with the bacteria that causes tuberculosis (TB). A skin test, also known as the Mantoux test, involves injecting a small amount of TB protein under the skin. A blood test, called an Interferon-Gamma Release Assay (IGRA), uses a blood sample to detect the presence of TB germs.
Both tests can help doctors diagnose TB infection, but there are key differences:
Skin Test:
- Requires multiple visits over several days.
- May give a false positive result.
- Can be affected by certain medications and medical conditions.
Blood Test:
- Requires only one visit.
- More specific than the skin test, meaning it is less likely to give a false positive.
- Not affected by medications or medical conditions that interfere with skin tests.
Choosing the right test depends on your individual circumstances and the recommendations of your doctor.
