What Causes Tumors?

Published in Tumor Formation 1 min read

Tumors are caused by the uncontrolled growth and multiplication of abnormal or damaged cells.

When the normal process of cell death and replacement breaks down, abnormal or damaged cells can start to grow and multiply uncontrollably. This unchecked growth can result in the formation of tumors, which are essentially lumps of tissue. According to information last updated on October 11, 2021, tumors form because "when cells grow old or become damaged, they die, and new cells take their place. Sometimes this orderly process breaks down, and abnormal or damaged cells grow and multiply when they shouldn't. These cells may form tumors, which are lumps of tissue."

Here's a breakdown of the process:

  • Normal Cell Growth: Healthy cells follow a regulated cycle of growth, division, and death.
  • Disrupted Process: When this process is disrupted, cells may not die when they should, or they may start dividing more rapidly than normal.
  • Abnormal Cell Accumulation: These abnormal cells accumulate, forming a mass or lump, known as a tumor.
