How to Use a Turntable

Published in Turntable operation guide 4 mins read

Using a turntable to play vinyl records can provide a rich audio experience. While models vary, the basic steps for operation are generally consistent.

Getting Started

Before playing, ensure your turntable is set up correctly and connected to a suitable audio system (like an amplifier and speakers).

Powering On

The first step is to power up the unit.

  • Turn the power knob: Locate the power knob, often combined with volume or speed control. First turn the power knob to the right in the on. Position. This activates the turntable's electronics.

Preparing the Record

  • Ensure the vinyl record is clean. Use a brush specifically designed for records to remove dust and debris from the surface.
  • Place the record carefully onto the turntable platter. The label should be facing up.

Playing a Record

Once the turntable is powered and the record is in place, you are ready to play.

Setting the Speed

  • Select the correct playback speed for your record (most commonly 33 1/3 RPM or 45 RPM) using the speed selector switch or button.

Engaging the Turntable

  • Start the platter rotation. Then press the start stop button to engage the turntable. This brings the platter up to the selected speed.

Positioning and Lowering the Tonearm

  • Unlock the tonearm if it has a lock.
  • Using the tonearm lift lever, gently raise the tonearm.
  • Guide the tonearm over the lead-in groove at the edge of the record using the finger lift or tonearm rest. Avoid touching the cartridge or stylus (needle).
  • Once positioned, slowly lower the tonearm using the lift lever. The stylus will descend into the groove, and the music will begin.

Stopping Playback

  • At the end of the record, the tonearm may automatically return and the turntable may shut off (on automatic models), or you may need to intervene.
  • For manual or semi-automatic models, use the tonearm lift lever to raise the tonearm.
  • Gently guide the tonearm back to its rest.
  • Lower the tonearm onto the rest using the lift lever.
  • Press the 'Stop' button to disengage the turntable and stop the platter rotation.
  • If the power doesn't turn off automatically, turn the power knob back to the 'off' position.
