How to Adjust a Polygon in InDesign

Published in Uncategorized 2 mins read

Adjusting a polygon's shape or number of sides in InDesign is particularly easy while you are drawing it, using simple keyboard shortcuts.

When you are using the Polygon Frame tool (or Polygon tool) in InDesign, you can modify the shape dynamically before releasing the mouse button.

Adjusting Polygon Shape While Drawing

To adjust a polygon as you draw it in InDesign, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Polygon Frame tool or the Polygon tool from the Tools panel.

  2. Click and drag on your page to begin drawing the polygon. Keep the mouse button held down.

  3. While still holding the mouse button, use the keyboard shortcuts below to modify the polygon's appearance:

    • Change the number of sides:

      • Press the Up Arrow key to add more sides to the polygon.
      • Press the Down Arrow key to reduce the number of sides (you can go down to a triangle).

    • Adjust the shape (add points/indentation):

      • While still holding the mouse button, press the Spacebar once.
      • Now, while holding the mouse button and the Spacebar, press the Up Arrow key to add points or indentations inward.
      • Press the Down Arrow key to make the sides more convex or less indented.

  4. Once the polygon has the desired number of sides and shape, release the mouse button.

Using these techniques allows you to quickly create polygons with various side counts and star-like indentations directly as you draw them, providing immediate visual feedback.
