Who is the CEO of the United Nations?

Published in United Nations 1 min read

The United Nations does not have a "CEO". The head of the United Nations is the Secretary-General, currently António Guterres.

António Guterres is the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations. He assumed office on January 1, 2017. The Secretary-General is the chief administrative officer of the organization and performs a variety of functions, including:

  • Diplomacy: Acting as a mediator in international disputes.
  • Advocacy: Promoting the UN's goals and values.
  • Administration: Overseeing the UN Secretariat.

While the Secretary-General is the highest-ranking official, the role is more akin to a chief diplomat and administrator than a corporate CEO. The Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.

In summary, while the UN doesn't have a CEO, António Guterres is its Secretary-General and serves as its chief administrative officer and spokesperson.
