The university has undergone name changes throughout its history. Originally established as Kogi State University, it was briefly renamed Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) in 2020. However, in 2003, it was renamed to Kogi State University (KSU). Therefore, the currently recognized full name of the university is Kogi State University.
