Male Urethritis Syndrome (MUS) refers to inflammation and irritation of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside the body. While not directly an STI itself, MUS is often caused by sexually transmitted infections.
Understanding Male Urethritis Syndrome (MUS)
MUS describes a condition affecting the male urethra, which can result from various causes.
Causes of MUS
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs):
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium (causes gonorrhea).
- Chlamydia trachomatis (causes chlamydia). These are the most common causes (Kularatne et al., 2022).
What Happens in MUS?
According to the CDC (2021), the urethra becomes inflamed and irritated when someone has MUS.
