What causes sticky urine?

Published in Urinary Health 1 min read

Sticky urine can be caused by several factors, often related to the presence of certain substances in the urine. Here are some common causes:

  • Protein: Urine containing protein can dry sticky due to its nature. This can happen in conditions like kidney disease, where protein leaks into the urine.
  • Mucus: A small amount of mucus in urine is normal, but excessive mucus can be a sign of a urinary tract infection (UTI), sexually transmitted infection (STI), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or kidney stones.
  • Glucose: High levels of glucose in urine, also known as glycosuria, can make urine sticky. This often occurs in diabetes.
  • Semen: Semen can also make urine sticky, especially after ejaculation.

If you notice sticky urine, it's important to consult a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
