BCG vaccine is generally given once in a lifetime.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a single dose of BCG vaccine, preferably at birth, to provide protection against severe forms of tuberculosis, such as miliary tuberculosis and tubercular meningitis, especially in early childhood. Booster doses are not recommended.
BCG Vaccination Schedule
Vaccine | Number of Doses | Recommended Age |
---|---|---|
BCG | 1 | Preferably at birth or as soon as possible thereafter |
Why Only One Dose?
A single dose of BCG is usually sufficient to provide lifetime immunity against severe forms of tuberculosis, which are the most dangerous for young children. Studies have not consistently shown that booster doses offer significant additional protection. Furthermore, repeated BCG vaccinations can increase the risk of local reactions and complications.
Exceptions
In rare cases, a healthcare provider might consider revaccination if the initial vaccination was not successful (e.g., no scar formation) and the individual remains at high risk of exposure to tuberculosis. However, this is not a routine practice.
