The PCV vaccination, or pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, helps protect against bacteria that cause pneumococcal disease. There are three types of PCV vaccines: PCV13, PCV15, and PCV20. These vaccines are recommended for children younger than 5 years and adults 50 years or older. They can also be recommended for people with certain risk conditions, such as those with weakened immune systems or chronic illnesses.
The PCV vaccine works by exposing the body to a weakened or inactive form of the bacteria. This triggers the immune system to produce antibodies that can fight off future infections from the same bacteria. The vaccine can help prevent a range of pneumococcal diseases, including:
- Pneumonia: An infection of the lungs.
- Meningitis: An infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
- Bacteremia: An infection of the bloodstream.
- Otitis media: An infection of the middle ear.
Important Note: The PCV vaccine is not a cure for pneumococcal disease. It is a preventative measure that helps reduce the risk of getting sick.
