Is the DPT vaccine live or attenuated?

Published in Vaccine Types 1 min read

The DTP vaccine is not a live or attenuated vaccine.

Based on the reference:

The DTP vaccine does not contain any live pathogen. Instead, it uses inactivated toxoid and either a dead pathogen or pure antigens (for pertussis) to stimulate an immune response. Therefore, there is no risk of the vaccine causing infection in individuals with weakened immune systems.

In summary, instead of using a weakened (attenuated) or live form of the pathogen, the DTP vaccine relies on:

  • Inactivated Toxoid: Modified bacterial toxins that are no longer harmful but still elicit an immune response.
  • Dead Pathogen or Pure Antigens: Killed pertussis bacteria or specific components (antigens) from the pertussis bacteria.
