What is Tdap?

Published in Vaccines 1 min read

Tdap is a combination vaccine that protects against three serious diseases: tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough).

  • Tetanus, also known as lockjaw, is a bacterial infection that affects the nervous system, causing muscle spasms and stiffness.
  • Diphtheria is a respiratory infection caused by bacteria that can lead to breathing difficulties and even death.
  • Pertussis (whooping cough) is a highly contagious respiratory infection that causes violent coughing fits, making it difficult to breathe.

The Tdap vaccine is recommended for adolescents and adults. It helps to boost immunity against these diseases, which can be particularly dangerous for young children and older adults.

Tdap is typically given as a single injection. It is safe and effective for most people, but some people may experience mild side effects such as redness, swelling, or pain at the injection site.
