The most common yellow fever vaccine is YF-VAX®.
YF-VAX® is a live-attenuated vaccine used to prevent yellow fever. It's prepared by culturing the 17D-204 strain of the yellow fever virus in living, avian leukosis virus-free (ALV-free) chicken embryos. This process weakens the virus so it can stimulate an immune response without causing the disease itself.
Key aspects of the yellow fever vaccine (YF-VAX®):
- Type: Live attenuated vaccine
- Strain: 17D-204 strain of yellow fever virus
- Culturing: Grown in chicken embryos
- Administration: Subcutaneous injection
The yellow fever vaccine provides long-lasting protection against the disease. A single dose is generally considered sufficient for life in most travelers. However, booster doses may be recommended in specific situations, as determined by international health regulations and individual risk factors. Check with your healthcare provider or travel clinic for the most up-to-date recommendations before travelling to areas where yellow fever is present.
